About
Education software, built where it is used
Loola AI Inc builds education technology from Borama, Somaliland. We began with Caalim, a study app for students, now past 20,000 downloads. Talking to the schools those students came from made the next problem obvious.
Teachers in the region are not short of commitment. They are short of hours. A secondary teacher may carry five classes across three grades, write every lesson plan by hand from a textbook, mark every exercise book personally, and keep attendance in a paper register somebody later copies into a spreadsheet. Most of that week goes on the parts of the job that do not need a teacher to do them.
Layli takes those parts off the desk. It reads the curriculum textbook a class is actually using and drafts the lesson plans, summaries, revision material and homework that follow from it. It marks what comes back, written answers included, and hands the result to the teacher to sign off. It does not decide anything a teacher should be deciding.
The pupil’s half is Caalim, the app where set work arrives and marked work comes back, at no cost to them. In most schools here that loop has been running on paper and goodwill. Now it runs on a phone.
How we build
Four things we hold to
Build for the schools that exist
Layli assumes shared devices, power that comes and goes, and teachers carrying more classes than anyone should. Those are the conditions it was written in.
Start from the textbook in the room
A teacher preparing pupils for an exam board cannot use generic AI output. Everything Layli writes starts from the scanned pages of the book that class is holding.
The teacher decides
Drafting the planning and the marking saves hours. Making the judgement call is not ours to automate. Every mark passes a teacher before a pupil sees it.
Somali is a first-class language
The classrooms are bilingual, so the platform is. Interface, support and training all run in Somali, and none of it was bolted on at the end.
